To understand where the beat generation comes from we need to place ourselves in the 50's. We are in the US, WWII has finished and the nation is victorious.The economy has grown more than suficiently and for most it's an Eldorado, « the » american dream lives in everybody 's mind. Thanks to; the politicians speeches,TV, cinema and more particularly Hollywood, a real dream factory.

however on the other side of the coin the youth are becoming agitated, bringing into questions issues of; poverty, racism and equality. This ever growing movement is mostly composed of youngsters who reject repression and assert themselves as having an alternative mind and an other way of life and thinking. They are conceived in a society where each has the right to satisfy his or her instinctual needs, its the beginning of the Beat Generation.

It is a literary, social, cultural and artistic movement inspired by J.Kerouac, W.Burroughs, and A.Gingsberg and many more to come. Underground they are, they don't see themselves as writers, poets or any kind of fucking artists. So they produce spontaneous masterpieces to provide a free and rhythmic prose. Drugs, mostly marijuana are not prohibited but used as spiritual liberators. From this first revolution, the hippie movement was born. The Beat Generation rejects bourgeois taboos for exemple sex, there society and conservative ways of thinking. They wanted a simple life and desired to create a simple sense of society without; hypocrisy, prejudice and artificial needs.

The Beatniks have each got there own literary style. There most known writings are Howl by Gingsberg, On the road by Kerouac and Naked Lunch by Burroughs. Howl has became cult hit because it has the same intentions of this movement , that is to say its an outrageous scream against the US of this time. This destruction between political and artistic act refers to the Dada's movement...
